Knee Pain

Anterior Knee Pain / Iliotibial Band / Arthritis / Jumpers Knee

The unfortunate truth is, many of us will suffer from knee pain during our lives. It is also true that this can happen to anyone at any age and is not necessarily related to how active you are. By way of example 50% of runners will develop a running related injury in any given year and of those injuries almost half will be knee related. Further, almost 25% of the population over 60 will suffer from symptomatic knee arthritis.

More often than not your lower limb biomechanics (how your leg moves) and core stability (hip pelvis and abdominal strength and control) will contribute to both the cause of your knee pain and your ability to fix / manage your knee pain.

Patellofemoral pain (anterior knee pain), jumper’s knee, ITB friction syndrome (Iliotibial band friction syndrome) and knee arthritis in either the medial or lateral compartment – are all affected by your biomechanics. Importantly though the biomechanics of each problem are all subtlety different and so therefore are the best ways to address and treat these problems.

A thorough clinical evaluation and video gait analysis is critical to understanding the potential contributing factors. Once these are understood there are often multiple different ways to address these factors including orthotics, strength and conditioning in conduction with our Physiotherapy team, and shoe selection.
